​Oliver Lewis (1856-1924), the African American jockey who rode the colt Aristides, won the first Kentucky Derby on May 17, 1875. His time of two minutes 37.75 seconds set an American record over the mile-and-a-half distance. In honor of Black History Month, we recognize "Isaac Murphy (1861 - 1896) - The first jockey to ride three Kentucky Derby winners, Buchanon (1884), Riley (1890), and Kingman (1891). He began his riding career at 14, steering four of the first five American Derby winners and riding several Latonia Derby winners. Murphy, a Lexington native, said: "I believe my life will be recorded as a success, though the reputation I enjoy was earned in the stable and saddle." Anna Mac Clarke, a Lawrenceburg, KY, native, was the first black woman in Kentucky to enlist in t the military during WII. She was a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC) and ultimately became a Third Office, commanding a WAAC platoon.
